Burning Down the Streets at Las Fallas Festival, in Spain

Article by Lauren

This has been a unique experience for sure. Las Fallas... pronounced "Las Fah-yas, which means "fire torch",  is the biggest, craziest and most entertaining Spanish festival. This event holds close to 2 million people on every street and corner in the entire city, and started March 15 and went until March 19th 2016.

There are some unusual things that happen at the festival, one including the most extravagant monumented characters, that flood the streets across Valencia.

Not only did Fallas have large character monuments across the city, it also had a fantastic light show every night at 8pm. The light show illuminated all of Valencia with synchronized music that plays along with every twinkling light.

Each night for an entire week, they have a spectacular fireworks show at midnight. On the last night of Fallas they set off the fireworks at 1:30am above the beautiful palm trees.

The Fallas monuments had gasoline watered all over and then lit with fireworks, that created a massive explosion. Say goodbye to "Timmy" for me... ha-ha!

So, at 10pm they lit the small Fallas monuments across the city. In total their were about 300 Fallas statues across all of Valencia. Then between midnight and 4am, they set the LARGE Fallas characters on fire!! Now some of them were so big and close to peoples homes in the streets... small businesses...wires....lights....they had to have an entire firefighter crew come and supervise.
